Languages are an essential part of the curriculum at Lady Barn House School. Our last ISI Inspection commented that “the development of language skill is a particular strength of the school. Pupils are introduced to a wide variety of languages and they are keen to learn, showing a high level of understanding and a willingness to speak”.
We have specialist teachers of French, Spanish, German and Mandarin and a dedicated teaching room with a SMART interactive whiteboard.
French is taught throughout the school from Kindergarten to Year Six and each class has a designated lesson once a week. We use the Jolie Ronde course book in Years Two to Five.
Following the Year Six French Trip, the children return to school to learn conversational Spanish. This is a programme which aims to teach pronunciation and basic holiday vocabulary. It also shows the pupils what it is like to learn a different language, in preparation for senior school.
There is the opportunity to try other modern foreign and classical languages, with clubs in Spanish, Latin, Classics, German, French Conversation and Mandarin (as an after-school option). We celebrate the rich diversity of language and culture in our school.
Year Six French trip
Year Six pupils look forward to an annual trip to the Pas de Calais region in France. They visit a Boulangerie, a Chocolaterie, a Goat Farm and two weekly Markets. They buy their own lunch at the Markets and eat at a local Bistro and Crêperie.
