Geography is a highly valued part of the curriculum at Lady Barn House School, as it provides a means of exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live.
Lady Barn pupils are naturally curious and imaginative and our aim is to build upon this ‘personal geography’ with lively and stimulating lessons. With this in mind, lessons are taught by subject teachers with a special interest and passion for the subject, ensuring that lessons are dynamic and engaging.
Knowledge, skills & understanding
Beginning in the Infants our pupils develop their knowledge, skills & understanding of geographical themes through practical experiences in their immediate surroundings. As the year progresses they widen their knowledge and understanding beyond their immediate surroundings to localities further afield, such as the British Isles in Year One and much further afield such as St Lucia in Year Two.
Burgeoning map skills remain a theme throughout the Infants, with pupils making their own maps and plans and using the extensive school grounds as a field work base. In the Junior School pupils build upon these skills further, recognising how places are linked in the world, as they study localities further afield such as India.
Different societies & cultures
Pupils begin to encounter different societies and cultures, inspiring them to think about their own place in the world, their values and their rights to other people and the environment.
River Bollin field trip
Pupils learn about the physical evolution of the world and the processes that have shaped the landscape over time. Pupils in Year Four spend a lesson at the River Bollin, identifying the river features they have learned in class.
In the Upper Juniors pupils enjoy taking on the role of ‘environmental activists’ protesting against the building of a bypass. They research answers to their own geographical questions about Ecuador and undertake an environmental survey of a local park.
Natural phenomena & disasters
Pupils are encouraged to think about important world events as they happen, such as earthquakes and volcanoes, with teachers responding to these events during lesson time.
Use of technology & media
Projectors in all classrooms give pupils and teachers easy access to maps, films and photographs and are an invaluable tool in delivering the curriculum.
